    Title:
    "The Dugout"
    Content:

come visit us here and post questions or comments about anything baseball- division races, trades, trivia, etc. We hope this will become the EDR Hot Stove session for those of us who need baseball to keep us warm in the winter.

My first question came up during my first visit to the New Yankee Stadioum last Thursday when I was a sad witness to perhaps the final game of the career of John Smoltz.

Anyway, the guy in front of me heard me bantering with the 80 year old  fan who was sitting next to me. He asked me if I knew how many players with more than 500 career home runs have hit 4 homers in a game. I think I know the answer but want to see what others think.

I think Mike Schmidt is one of them. Who do you think the other is?

Good question Larry.  At first I was thinking it was Gary Sheffield because he just hit his 500th, but he never hit four.  The I thought of Thome, I was sure he had done it, but nope.  So I had to look it up at that point and found out that Willie Mays hit four.  I was really surprised that only 15 players have done it and only two from the 500 club.

We always talk about the 5 tool player (hits, hits with power, speed, defense, with plate discipline. But how many people really meet this criteria over a full career?

So with this criteria:  Name the Major leaguers who have had at least 250 home runs, 2000 hits, 1000 runs, 1000 RBI's, 1000 walks, 300 Stolen Bases and a Gold Glove in their carrer?

The answer is below. I got 5 of the 6 and was stunned by the last one.

      1) Rickey Henderson (go to the back of the classroom if you didn't get that one!)

      2) Willie Mays (actually you have to go back if you missed him also)

      3) Barry Bonds

      4) Joe Morgan

      5) Craig Biggio (granted a little tougher)

      and the last one is.........................

      6) Bobby Abreu?  I had picked Ryne Sandberg, but he just misses as he only had 761 walks in his career.

Yes, Bobby Abreu. He won a GG in 2005, has 342 career stolen bases (5 times 30+ stolen bases in a season) and just hit his 250th career home run last week to join the club.

Obviously I rate the other 5 higher (Bonds pre-steroids), but still, this is a quietly impressive career.
