, tagged bp oil spill, oil spillI'm wrapping up an exciting week of work (with one more to go) and there's still a lot left to do. On my docket today is:
• Process video and audio interviews (environmental lawyer, local engineer, and a wholesale fish company owner on on my list)
• See if Billy Nungesser has a boat for me and when I can get a ride into the Gulf to see the BP oil spill
• Finalize plans with Tulane University to video a professor detailing how oil breaks down in seawater
• Arrange interviews for next week
• Scour your questions and do my best to address them

Jeff,
Hope you are having a productive day today! I just came across this article about "spillionaires" that are cropping up around the Gulf. According to ABC News, Alaska actually benefited economically from the Valdez spill because an entire new industry to cleanup the oil was created.
The article tells about an environmental consulting firm based in NY that now has 1,500 workers in the region! Wow. I know a lot of national firms are deploying large numbers of their staff to the Gulf, but what about EPs who are based in the region? Are smaller firms located down there getting any of the action?

Lauren,
During the beginning of the week (Aug. 2, 3, 4) I'll be speaking with representatives from chambers of commerce in Alabama and Florida, as well as some professionals who are likely to contract out work to environmental consultants. I'll be sure to ask about opportunities in these specialties and about the contributions this segment of the professional population might find in the Gulf region.
Thanks for reading.
