I'm wondering if Google maps shows it? Do you have a nearby address or lat/long?
This is from the key for Brooklyn.
It should read BDS, and stands for "a dumbwaiter shaft of incombustible material".
Looks interesting! Would that white be a water stain?
This is probably no help, but check out Baseline Rd in Fontana at around 34.122783,-117.456057 on Google, at the 500ft resolution it looks a lot similar to your 1966 photo.
Lauren, here's The New York Times article:

Hi Diane, I guessed MGP as soon as I saw the picture. There is one in Troy NY where I went to school, and I did some research to figure out what the strange round building with few windows was. In that case, the structure around the expansion diaphragm was a full building to protect from the weather.
I'm on a learning high - thanks for this great link!
Has anyone seen studies on how cloud seeding in the west and mid-west might affect the water supply to the east?
I thought I recognized that voice!
Thanks Mr. Rogers, we miss you...
I hope that the "lurkers" in your group will be the leaders of the next group - offering discussion on the tidbits they've picked up here and there.
Thanks all, I'll update with what we find.
What would an appropriate moisture level be? Could I use a woodworking style moisture meter?
I am a homeowner with no environmental background. I recently (07) had a room in my house redone becuase of a leaky window. One wall was torn out and the drywall was replaced. How quickly would the copper corrosion show up, and could it be caused by something else as well? Can I just take a look at the copper in the outlet on that wall, or perhaps install a scrap piece of copper and use it as a monitor? I've noticed a bit of discoloration to the wall lately, but no odor in that room at all.
Should I have that wall tested?
By the way , for those 1600 additional sites: "These completed cleanups will occur over several years" and "If all Recovery Act money is used directly for assessment and cleanup work", and none of the money is used for oversight...
