[This article originally appeared in the April 2008 edition of the AWMA's EM magazine.]
We doubt any environmental professional would argue with the statement that technology is rapidly changing our world, and a big part of that change is the way in which professionals connect and communicate with one another. Computers, cell phones, and the Internet allow us to spend more time away from the office, visiting clients and attending conferences, by providing easy anywhere/anytime access to information and the tools needed for working and communicating with employees, colleagues, and clients. The Internet has also given rise to the creation of online communities.
Like other industries, the environmental industry can expect to see increased interaction via professional communities in the future. Whenever the economy is threatening a downturn, as it is now, it becomes much more critical to watch market barometers, stay abreast of shifting trends, stay close to existing clients, and get where the action is. Professional communities for environmental professionals will provide a valuable avenue for us to interact with each other, share ideas, and weather the economic storm.
